"Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate in their object-relations." - Sigmund Freud
All meaning relies on perception for its creation; therefore, everything either has meaning or is meaningless. Because of this perceptual basis, all meaning is interpretive, non-factual, and hence meaning is meaningless.
... this statement probably applies due to the greater cerebral cortex mass in human brains, which translates to greater and more complex memory capacities. Unlike many animals, humans are able to synthesize meaning into recollections. Unfortunately this meaning synthesis is based on defense mechanisms and a tendency to analyze in terms of threats. The reasoning behind this is that threats must be acted upon; a threat needs to be eliminated and avoided. Non-threats do not require attention. Original functioning in humans, based on survival, hence renders the most basic human thought patterns as defensive and pessimistic in nature. Only because of this do harmful emotions - hate, for one - exist. It is possible through effort, patience, and training to alter instantaneous cognitive processing so that it does not automatically fallback on defensive thoughts for situational and memory-based interpretations. This results in more optimal functioning and heightened trust in self and others.
